Best Podcasting Microphones, USB Interfaces, & Monitor Headphones

All the tools I recommend for recording audio for podcasts, voiceovers, Skype-ing and webinars. My current setup is a Shure SM7B via XLR into a dbx 286s and then via TRS cable into a Sound Devices Mix Pre-6. More on that and other options below.

Microphones

Shure SM7B Microphone

Shure's broadcast microphone comes with two pop filter covers, XLR output, and great sound. You need about 60db of gain to power this, but Michael Jackson used an SM7 on the Thriller album, so it must be pretty good, right? I use it as my podcast and voiceover microphone.

Audio-Technica ATR2100x USB Mic

Use this mic with a USB output or an XLR cable and get a quality dynamic mic and sound great at an astoundingly low price. The included stand is a nice addition too.

Pre-Amps & Audio Interfaces

dbx 286s Pre-Amp

This is a 4 channel strip that includes a preamp, compressor and de-esser. The dbx 286s set up correctly will eliminate most of the ordinary post production work in audio editing.

RODECaster Pro USB Interface

This thing is a beast! If you are serious about podcasting and don’t mind a larger piece of equipment on your desk, I highly recommend you get this. It has 4 XLR inputs, you can hook up your phone or computer to play music or bring in callers, can plug in 4 pairs of headphones, connects via USB to your computer, and even has a microSD card slot to record directly to the device.

Sound Devices Mix-Pre 6

This is the professional level audio recorder I use to record my audio podcasts. It has 4 XLR inputs and some of the best pre-amps I’ve ever used.

The limiter (that makes sure your audio doesn’t peak and distort) is also analog, not digital, so even when your input gain levels are too high your recording will be saved and sound usable.

Microphone Boom Arm

Rode PSA1 Studio Arm

Having your mic on a studio arm is just plain functional. Attach it to your desk and swivel it in position for podcasting or Skype calls. Not using it? Close the arm and free up some work space. Rode's arm has a strong attaching mechanism.

Monitor Headphones & Speakers

Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Headphones

My all-time favorite monitoring headphones. Great sounds, great looks, and great comfort. Larger drivers and better build quality than the 30X, the 50X is where it's at. The three cord options make these headphones usable in any environment.

Mackie MR5 Monitoring Speakers

Before clicking export and upload, it is helpful to review your edit through both headphones and speakers. These speakers offer great sound so you can hear all the subtleties you wouldn't with built-in ones and they also won't break the bank. See our review here.
